The man who authorities say fatally shot a 5-year-old Cleveland girl is scheduled to be arraigned for an aggravated murder charge of Wednesday, Fox8.com reported.
Police identified 32-year-old Geoffrey Gurkovich as the suspect, who not only killed 5-year-old Jermani Brooks but also wounded her mother, Noni Brooks, 33, in a shooting on Sunday evening.
Investigators claim Brooks and her daughter were not specifically targeted.
"The Brooks family was not the target at all. They happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath said at a news conference on Tuesday.
McGrath added that Gurkovich arrived at Crossburn Avenue -- the location of the shooting -- after his girlfriend made an aggravated menacing complaint.
"He went looking for the person identified in that aggravated menacing complaint and decided he would just fire numerous rounds into his vehicle," the police chief said.
Authorities believe the man behind the menacing complaint may have been at the home where Brooks had parked her car. He approached the vehicle and opened fire around 11:00 p.m.
"The driver of the vehicle had gone onto the residence to collect some money that was owed to him. While he was inside the house, that's when the suspect drove up, saw the vehicle, got out of his car and indiscriminately fired those rounds into the vehicle," McGrath said.
In addition to Brooks and her daughter, Jermani, her two other children were in the car: a two-month-old infant and an 8-year-old child. Neither of them were injured.
Police were able to track Gurkovich to a home in Newburgh Heights and arrested him on Tuesday during a traffic stop.
