Sunanda Pushkar, wife of an Indian Union minister, Shahi Tharoor, died an 'unnatural death', according to doctors. She had injury marks on her body.
Pushkar, 52, died in her room in a five-star hotel in New Delhi on Friday, CNN-IBN reports. Her body was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for postmortem examination.
"The postmortem has been completed, we have sent samples for toxicology analysis to rule out poisoning," Dr. Sudhir Gupta, head of the autopsy board at the hospital, told CNN. "This is a preliminary report but we can say that it is a case of unnatural sudden death. There were certain injuries on her body but we can't reveal details at the moment. Final report will be given in few days."
Pushkar's iPad and iPhone have been taken by the police from the hotel suite where she was staying. Also, the police are examining CCTV footage from the hotel and questioning the hotel staff, reports NDTV.
Pushkar, 52, recently made headlines in India after a Twitter spat with Mehr Tarar, a Pakistani journalist. She accused Tarar of stalking her husband and also alleged that Tarar was an ISI agent and spying on Tharoor.
However, Tarar denied the allegations calling them "wild." "Her tweets to me are so crazy that all I can do is laugh," Tarar said.
Pushkar's death came as a shock to Tarar. "I just woke up and read this. I'm absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don't know what to say. Rest in peace, Sunanda," she tweeted.
Speaking to CNN, Friday, she expressed grief and sorrow over her death. "I have been up the whole night, frozen in one spot, unable to eat or even have a sip of water," she said.
"She had a Twitter fight with me, and then she died. I didn't even get a chance to call her up, and clear the air," she added. "She seemed larger than life, always smiling, and the manner in which she died would haunt me for a long, long time."
Pushkar, a businesswoman from Dubai, married Tharoor in 2010. Tharoor is a Central cabinet minister and holds the portfolio of human resource and development. He earlier was minister of state for external affairs and former United Nations under-secretary-general.
