Georgia (8-4) finished the regular season with two straight wins, including a 41-35 double-overtime victory on Nov. 30 against Georgia Tech. A large part of the Bulldogs' success was due to senior quarterback Aaron Murray, who passed for 3,075 yards and 26 touchdowns before tearing his ACL on Nov. 23. Hutson Mason will get the starting nod on Wednesday, according to ESPN.
"I'm very grateful for the opportunity. Nebraska is a very good team. It's going to be a challenge," the junior said, via ESPN. "They're a team that's a lot like us. They've been hit by the injury bug, they're 8-4, we're 8-4. And if you look at their games, one thing I've noticed is that they were one drive, one play from being 9-3, being in a bigger bowl, or playing in a conference championship like us."
Mason started in the Nov. 30 against Tech and passed for 299 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, pushing his season total to 648 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
With Murray out, Georgia is expected to rely heavily on their rushing attack behind running back Todd Gurley. The sophomore halfback tallied 903 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground this season, and Wednesday gives him the chance to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark.
"I think he's one of the best backs in America," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said. "I don't think there's any doubt about that. I think most people that have seen him play would say that as well, and I'm going to leave it at that."
Nebraska (8-4) had an uneven finish to the season, dropping two of their last games. Junior running back Ameer Abdullah carried the offense this season with 1,568 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
