A shooting that took place in front of a San Diego mall early Tuesday morning has left one woman dead and a man critically injured.
San Diego Police Lt. Mike Hastings told NBC that the woman who was killed made a 911 call at 1:15 a.m. from the Westfield Mission Valley Mall Macy's parking lot.
When police arrived, they found a woman in her 20s who had been shot in the head, along with a man, also thought to be in his 20s, with gunshot wounds to the torso and head. Law enforcement pronounced the woman dead on site, while the man was rushed to a medical facility nearby to be treated for his "life-threatening injuries," Hastings told NBC.
"We're not able to talk to our victims," however, "there were some witnesses and they're being interviewed right now," Hastings stated. Officials opened an investigation into the murder, and were reportedly checking out surveillance video footage from the immediate area.
"We have a lot of evidence to look at," Hastings told NBC. He added that investigators couldn't yet say whether the shooter knew the victim, or if the murder was random.
Police said the suspect appears to be a male wearing tan colored pants, driving a dark grey Honda.
Hastings told NBC that he thought the store was open, with extended hours in observance of the imminent holidays. But according to the Macy's website, the Westfield Mission Valley Mall location was scheduled to close at 10 p.m.
