Benedict Cumberbatch, following months away for filming on Marvel's "Doctor Strange," is finally returning to Baker Street. That's right, season four of the hit Masterpiece and PBS series "Sherlock" has officially begun production.

The two networks announced the news earlier today as the international hit drama starts gearing up for another batch of three episodes.

"Sherlock series four - here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street, and it always feels like coming home," Steven Moffat, co-creator, writer and executive producer on Sherlock, said in a statement. "Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and terror and tragedy are looming. This is the story we've been telling from the beginning and it's about to reach its climax."

So, what can fans of the updated detective series expect for season four?

In a release, Masterpiece teased fans with three new episodes featuring "laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary adventures."

Season four will begin with Sherlock returning to British soil following his short-lived exile at the conclusion of season three. Meanwhile, John Watson (Martin Freeman) and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) are expecting their first child together.

"This is the kind of news that has our audience cheering," Rebecca Eaton, Masterpiece executive producer, said in a statement. "Along with our millions of fans, I can't wait to see what the boys will do next."

It is unknown when the new season will premiere (though a 2017 debut is expected) but fans are surely hoping it will be soon. Other than last year's Christmas special, "Sherlock" has been off the air since season three debuted in 2014.
