Former United States Congressman Anthony Weiner might be in the running for New York City mayor, Reuters reported.
Weiner is most known for resigning from office after tweeting inappropriate pictures of himself.
In an interview Weiner, and his wife Huma Abedin had with New York Times magazine, said this may be his only chance to run for office.
"I don't have this burning, overriding desire to go out and run for office," Weiner said. "It's not the single animating force in my life as it was for quite some time. But I do recognize, to some degree, it's now or maybe never for me, in terms of running for something."
After some early polling, Weiner realized that he had a real shot at one of the most prestigious mayoral positions in the United States.
According to the magazine, the poll was done by David Binder, a pollster for the Obama administration. Binder said the purpose of the poll was to see how Weiner, who is a Democrat, would be received by the public.
"I don't have this burning, overriding desire to go out and run for office," Weiner said, a Democrat who was once considered an early front-runner in the race. "It's not the single animating force in my life as it was for quite some time. But I do recognize, to some degree, it's now or maybe never for me, in terms of running for something."
Experts say that the race for mayor’s spot in New York is still wide open. So far City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has led in early polling. The preliminary election is Sept. 10.
Weiner and Abedin are happy for the chance to get back to some semblance of normalcy.
“We have been in a defensive crouch for so long,” Weiner said. “We are ready to clear the decks on this thing.”
Weiner could find a bit of hope in the road to redemption former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is traveling. Sanford is currently running against Elizabeth Colbert Busch, sister of TV personality Stephen Colbert, for a seat in the First Congressional District of South Carolina.
