'Call of Duty: Ghosts' Multiplayer Makes Activison Responsible For the No. 1 Game This Holiday Season

When Rockstar Games was hitting it big with the release of "Grand Theft Auto: V" and breaking Guinness World Records with its sales, Activision told the developer not to get too comfortable with those World Records.

The company was, of course, talking about the release of "Call of Duty: Ghosts," which was right around the corner and is now here on both next-generation consoles the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well as previous generation consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

While "Ghosts" hasn't yet toppled "GTA V," it's well on its way. Microsoft has announced that the title is the number one most played Xbox One multiplayer game worldwide and is on its way to becoming the number one top selling Xbox One title in retails sales in north America at stores like Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Walmart. In standalone Xbox One software retail sales, the game is also number one in the United Kingdom, according to reports culled from The Wall Street Journal.

While it's success on the Xbox One is undeniable, the game can boast being one of the best next-gen games in general. Sony Computer Entertainment too has announced that "Call of Duty: Ghosts" is leading pack on the PlayStation 4 as both the most played game on that console and the highest selling game in retail sales in North America at Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Walmart. It's too soon to tell what the impact of the game in the U.K. will be for PlayStation because the console just had its launch there on Nov. 29.

"Around the globe, "Call of Duty: Ghosts" is leading the next generation. It's the number one selling title at key retailers and it's also the most played game on Xbox One and PS4 globally," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. "As we've said before, we've got the best community of fans in the world, and we're thrilled they're coming with us to the next generation."

Not content with being the number one game on next-gen, Microsoft also reports that the game is the most desired multiplayer game on Xbox 360.

"Congratulations to our friends at Microsoft for the launch of the Xbox One," said Dave Stohl, executive vice president, worldwide studios, Activision Publishing, Inc. "Xbox and Call of Duty together have formed a valued and lasting partnership on Xbox 360, and we know this is just the beginning. So we look forward to an exciting new future on Xbox One."

According to The Journal, more than one billion multiplayer matches of Call of Duty: ghosts launched for both current gen systems and PS4 on November 5 and on November 22 on the Xbox One.
