On the eve of the launch of Sony's new next-generation console the PlayStation 4, Activision has had to come out and confirm that its highly anticipated "Call of Duty: Ghosts" will need a day-one patch in order to run the single-player at the native 1080p resolution.

The PlayStation 4 version of the game is supposed to run at 1080p but, apparently all retail copies of the game will need to run this patch before they can run the game rather than being upscaled from 720p according to reports from IGN.

The news first broke via Eurogamer and has now been confirmed in a statement from Activision to IGN.

"Call of Duty: Ghosts runs natively at 1080p on the PlayStation 4. There was a configuration issue in the retail version on single player mode only. This has been addressed with a day one software update. People will be able to download the day one update when PlayStation 4 launches in their territory and play at native 1080p."

Infinity Ward confirmed last month that Ghosts runs on a native 1080p resolution on the PlayStation 4 despite simply being upscaled from 720p on Microsoft's Xbox One.

"there's no specific reason why one's 720p, one's 1080p. That's just the way the optimization came out to. To keep a smooth frame rate we needed to be 720p on Xbox One. That being said, it is being upscaled to 1080p, so it is outputting 1080p on your TV, and for the most part the game does look really good," said Mark Rubin, an executive producer at Infinity Ward.

While Sony's PlayStation 4 retail copies of "Call of Duty: Ghosts" will be sold to several hundred gamers with a problem or defect, Activision has already run a fix on the problem and gamers will still be able to play the new game as soon as they hook up their new console. However, they just might have to wait an extra minute or so for the day-one patch to download.
