Clinton 'Sends' First Tweet With Help of Colbert; Explains His Reluctance to Tweet and Email (VIDEO)

The 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton has finally joined Twitter, according to the New York Daily News.

The former president was interviewed by comedian Stephen Colbert at the Clinton Global Initiative over the weekend. The interviewed aired on Comedy Central on Monday.

The two laughed about Clinton not having an account and Clinton said he was hesitant to sign up.

“I think I’m so, sort of, insecure. Like … what if you tweet and nobody tweets back?” Clinton joked. “There’s nothing worse than a friendless tweeter, right?”

According to the Hill.com, Colbert pushed Clinton to post his first tweet.

Colbert pulled out a smart phone and asked, “Would you like to break into the 21st century right now, and send your first tweet?"

At this point Colbert had already created an account for Clinton.

"Now, @PresidentClinton was taken. @WilliamJeffersonClinton was taken. But @PrezBillyJeff was available," Colbert said getting a laugh from Clinton.

Clinton’s first tweet read, “Just spent amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane? He is cool! #cgiu”.

By Tuesday morning, Clinton’s new twitter account had almost 29,000 followers.

According to the Daily News, Clinton and Colbert also joked about the former hesitation to use emails.

“After I become president and everybody started sending blizzards of emails within the administration, the Congress subpoenaed them all,” said Clinton. “And all these young people – drunk with the power of the new technology – said the first thing that came to their heads, so some of these emails were mildly embarrassing.”

Colbert also asked Clinton why he is using his retirement funds to tackle global issues.

“It’s totally selfish,” Clinton joked. “I do it because I’m good at it and I’m not good enough to play golf on the senior tour and I don’t play my saxophone as much as I used to so I don’t like to do it in public.

“And it makes me happy. I do it because I think that for the life I’ve been given by the American people, I’d be kind of a slug if I didn’t do it.”

The new twitter account has not been verified.
