A Kentucky couple arrested for refusing the leave the county clerk's office where they were denied a license for marriage was fined a penny on Monday.
The Reverend Maurice "Bojangles" Blanchard and Dominique James were charged with trespassing for not vacating the premises, according to the Associated Press.
Blanchard and James were taken into police custody in January, after they were refused a marriage license and wouldn't leave following closing. They appeared in court Monday, when Assistant Jefferson County Attorney Prosecutor Matthew Welch said that it was clear the two had trespassed at the site of the office.
But he then allowed the jury to determine how much the couple should be fined.
The court decided Blanchard and James must hand over one cent for their transgression.
According to the Courier-Journal, the two faced a fine of up to $250 for third-degree trespassing.
Blanchard regarded the win as a "big victory," after the jury understood the couple's situation and chose to fine accordingly.
