The Internet has been buzzing about Andy Kaufman and the possibility of the comedian is still alive. Earlier in the week, Kaufman's brother Michael Kaufman took that stage at an event to honor the comedian and told the audience that he found a letter from Andy years ago that said the comedian had faked his own death.
On stage with Michael was an unidentified woman who claimed to be Andy's daughter. The two said that Andy had faked his death back in 1984. The comedian (supposedly) died in '84 from a rare form of lung cancer, but he was known for talking about faking his own death.
Most people believe the whole thing is a hoax, especially after it was revealed that the woman claiming to be Andy's daughter is an actress. Others felt Michael was in on the hoax too. Everyone has been weighing in on the rumor including former wrestler and current WWE Commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler, Rant Sports reports.
Lawler and Kaufman weren't exactly friends. The two had a notorious feud after Lawler called out the comedian for wrestling with women. He told CNN that he secretly does hope Andy is still alive.
"I would like nothing better than to know Andy was still alive and been with us all this time. But like anybody else, I really don't know any more than what I've heard," he said. "It could be a great hoax in his honor, dreamed up by his friend Bob Zmuda and his brother, Michael. That would be something that would be in keeping with Andy's tradition, but who's to say. It could really be legit. There should be a Wrestlemania rematch between Andy and The King. We could rekindle the feud with no problem."
At the event the woman told the audience that Andy faked his own death because he had fallen in love with a woman and was living in hiding with his family. Supposedly, he was supposed to resurface at the event but got cold feet.
This isn't the first Andy had reportedly wanted to make himself known to the world. His brother said in the letter Andy was going to meet him at a restaurant on Christmas Eve in 1999 but instead he was handed yet another letter when he arrived.
"It was too much pressure to be Andy Kaufman. I just wanted to be Andy," the letter supposedly reads. "I think that's why I got sick. I had to change completely and quickly. I'm extremely happily married with the most wonderful wife in the whole wide world and with the two greatest kids: a 10-year-old daughter and a son who is 8."
