Top Republican Makes Move to Hinder Democratic Measures on Gun Control

A top Republican in Congress is making a move that could potential hinder Senate progress on Gun Control, according to CNN.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, is known for his adamant disagreement with the measure the Democratic- controlled Senate has already taken against gun violence.

He is currently drawing up a bill that is expected to be the opposite of anything Democrats have already drawn up. Beth Levine, a spokeswoman for Grassley said the details of the bill cannot be released to public.

"Sen. Grassley is putting together a bill to reduce gun violence without violating the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens," she told CNN. "The bill is still being written, so we're not able to share it at this time."

Grassley has been against the assault weapon ban and the ban of high capacity magazines—the two major points in the first wave of legislation Congress released in its fight for gun control. He is also hesitant to agree with the proposed background checks for those who want to purchase guns.

Despite President Barack Obama’s push for gun control after the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut that killed 20 school children, gun control measures are moving slowly. The Senate is struggling to pass anything new and getting the 60 out of 100 votes needed to pass new legislation is becoming more difficult.

This new bill from Grassley could help strength conservative and NRA opposition to gun control, as well as create a hiding place for Democrats who are not exactly on board with their fellow party members.

President Obama has called out advocates of gun rights to stop their hindrance of stricter gun laws.

"There are some powerful voices on the other side who are interested in running out the clock, or changing the subject," the president said. "Their assumption is that people will just forget about it" as Newtown recedes further into the past.

According to the Obama, if they are successful, “shame on us.”
