Authorities released information for the first time Thursday that provides insight into Adam Lanza’s mindset and his home environment according to NBC News.
Lanza is the 20-year old man who went into Sandy Hook Elementary School in December and shot 27 people including himself. He had shot his mother, Nancy, before heading to Sandy Hook. He lived with his mother.
According to authorities, the massacre, which ended in the death of 20 students and six faculty members, took 154 bullets and lasted only five minutes. It is documented as the second worst school shooting in United States history.
Search warrants revealed items that can shed light into the mind of Lanza. Authorities found a host of weapons in the Lanza’s house in Newtown, Connecticut, which included: nine knives, two rifles, three Samurai swords and a seven foot pole with a spearhead at one end and a blade on the other end. The search also turned up 1,600 rounds of ammunition.
Weapons were not the only items found, in addition to the arsenal were seven of Lanza’s journals, drawings he created and a National Rifle Association guide on how to learn to shoot a pistol. Authorities also found a certificate from the NRA.
According to NBC News, books including "Look Me in the Eye – My life with Aspergers," and "Born on a Blue Day – Inside the Mind of an Autistic Savant".
Lanza also had news clippings from the New York Times about a school shooting that took place at Northern Illinois University in 2008..
Authorities believed that releasing the information would benefit the public and not endanger the investigation.
"After consultation with the investigators, it was decided that much of the information in the search warrants would not sought to be sealed and that the release of the above basic crime scene information would not jeopardize the active and continuing criminal investigation into this unprecedented tragedy," said State Attorney Stephen Sedensky III according to ABC News.
Sedensky is the state’s attorney for the Judicial District of Danbury.
