Defense Distributed, a renowned 3-D gun making organization in America, announced that its founder, Cody Wilson, is now a Federal Firearms Licensee after submitting the application nearly six months ago, ARS Technica reported.
The announcement was made on the company's official Facebook page on March 16, along with a picture of the license captioned with, Look who now has a license to manufacture firearms! The work begins!"
The license gives Wilson the approval to manufacture and sell the guns he makes. He needs to keep a record of all production and sales. But Wilson said that he would not start sales until he receives his supplemental license known as Class 2 Special Occupational Taxpayer (SOT), which will allow him to make firearms on a larger scale. The SOT is likely to arrive in a few weeks as Wilson applied for it shortly after receiving his firearms license on Saturday.
"The big thing it allows me to do is that it makes me [a manufacturer] under the law-everything that manufacturers are allowed to do," Wilson told ARS Technica. "I can sell some of the pieces that we've been making. I can do firearms transactions and transport."
The non-profitable organization has been making samples of guns for a few months now and also tested one of its AR-15 semi-automatics recently, which does not require a license under American law. Wilson had to wait for six months to get his firearms license after submitting his application to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in October 2012, which is normally a process of 60 days, according to ARS Technica report.
Wilson's AR-15 design was capable of withstanding 660 rounds during the demonstration, but Wilson expects it to easily withstand 1,000 rounds. He also said he had an AK-47 magazine printed.
