New records released Thursday show that the boyfriend of the woman who was fatally shot after a car chase at the U.S. Capitol alerted the authorities multiple times, expressing concerns for her emotional state and the safety of their young daughter.
The Associated Press reported that 34-year-old Miriam Carey, who reportedly suffered from postpartum depression and psychosis, told officers that she thought the president of the United States was watching her.
"She stated that President Obama put Stamford in lock down after speaking to her, because she is the Prophet of Stamford," the police report filed after officers answered a call to her Stamford condominium on Dec. 10 read.
The late dental hygienist tried to slam her vehicle through a barrier at the White House on Oct. 3 before taking police officers on a high-speed chase that resulted in her death. Her 1-year-old daughter, who was sitting in the black Infiniti during the chase, survived with minor injuries.
Carey's boyfriend Eric Francis told police officers in December that he was worried for his daughter's well-being, because Carey was exhibiting strange behavior and making odd comments. Francis called the authorities after Carey took the child outside in the cold rain wearing nothing but pajamas.
"Miriam, she's outside now with the baby without any coat...She's just like physically...I mean they definitely need to take her somewhere to get help," Francis said in a 911 call obtained by the Associated Press. "She locked herself in the bathroom and the baby's crying. It's been going on for a week now."
That same month, Francis phoned law enforcement authorities two times in one evening. He said Carey was acting in a delusional manner, and speaking illogically. The officers who answered the call reported seeing milk splattered all over the apartment, while Carey violently resisted going to the hospital. She tried kicking one of the police officers and was escorted to a medical facility for an evaluation.
Family members have maintained that Carey was not, in fact, mentally unstable, and have questioned whether the police used too much force against her.
