Details about the shooting that took place on Monday at a Nevada middle school are slowly leaking out including the identity of a teacher killed in the ordeal, according to CBS News.
The shooter, a student at the school, injured two 12-year-old students and killed Michael Landsberry before taking his own life. Any explanation as to why the student decided to bring a gun to school or how he chose those who were shot died with him, according to CNN.
Landsberry was a popular math teacher and soccer coach at the school. Authorities say that the retired Marine was killed as he tried to help the two wounded students, according to CNN.
"That was the kind of person that Michael was," Reggie Landsberry, Michael's brother, told CNN. "He was the kind of person that if somebody needed help, he would be there."
Jose Cazares, a student at the school, told the Associated Press that he was hanging out with friends when he saw the gunman open fire and shoot two students. The gunman then aimed at Cazares before Landsberry moved between him and the gunman.
"He was telling him to stop and put the gun down," Cazares said. "Then the kid, he yelled out 'No!' Like, he was yelling at him, and he shot him. He was calm, he was holding out his hand like, 'put the gun in my hand.'"
One of the students at the school told CNN that the gunman was not the type of kid that anyone ever expected would turn to violence.
"He was a really nice kid," Amaya Newton said. "He would make you smile when you were having a bad day. I believe it was because I saw him getting bullied a couple of times, and I think he took out his bullying."
The shooting happened almost one year after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., sparked renewed debate across the country over gun control. Since August there have been at least five incidents involving firearms being used at schools, according to CNN.
