Facebook To Introduce Hashtags on Its Website?

According to reports from Techcrunch and PCMag, Social Networking site Facebook is planning to introduce the use of hashtags (#) on its website.

The News Feed update is not the only thing that is going to change in the social networking site Facebook, suggests news reports by tech sites Techcrunch and PCMag. Both sites published reports Thursday which stated that Facebook is planning to introduce the use of hashtags on its website.

Hashtags are commonly used on Twitter and enables users to pull up tweets about a particular subject and has become the microblogging site's most recognizable symbols. While some Facebook users have been adding hashtags to their posts there hasn't been an effort to correlate subjects and posts as on Twitter.

If Facebook incorporates hashtags on its website, it could be a big step in the world of social networking. Since Twitter already uses this symbol, it makes sense to shift its functions from one social networking platform to another.

"I really don't see this hurting Twitter at all," said Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group. "Other social networks use them, so it's not like Facebook is the first to jump on the bandwagon. What we're probably going to see is more hashtag sprawl or hashtag hash, in other words."

Also, since Facebook has been receiving a lot of mainstream attention, it makes complete sense to incorporate the hashtag function on the website.

"This is nothing other than Facebook copying another site's features," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy. "This is part of their strategy, whether it's copying Google+ photography or Twitter hashtags. This will have no impact on Twitter."
