Ryan Murphy, co-creator of "Glee" announced that Season 6 will mark the end of the series. Cory Monteith's death has forced the production team to rewrite the end.
Fox Entertainment's "Glee" has ruled the hearts of many for years now. First aired in May, 2009, the series has become a favorite among viewers aged 14 to 25 years. As fans continue to mourn the death of Glee's lead character Cory Monteith, more bad news has begun making the rounds. At a Paley Center for Media event honoring FX Networks on Wednesday night, co-creator of the series, Ryan Murphy, announced that Season 6 will mark the end of the series, reports PEOPLE magazine. With Monteith's death, the network was forced to kill the actor's character "Finn" in season 5, which is currently airing.
According to reports, Murphy and his team had decided that the series would end with highlights of Finn (Monteith) and Rachel's (Lea Michele) love story. However, since that is not possible, the production team is working on a new ending for the series.
"I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was -- he was in it," Murphy said. "I knew what the last line was -- she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens, you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we're figuring that out now."
The absence of Finn's character has impacted the viewership of Glee. The season premier attracted a 30 percent lower viewership than did the season 4 opener. Season 5 has also been able to earn only a 2.0 rating. However, a season 5 episode where the entire cast paid tribute to Monteith attracted over 7.5 million viewers, the highest of this season. The episode included a heart-wrenching rendition of "Make You Feel My Love" by Michele, who was also Monteith's real life love interest.
