A line of organic sunscreens made for babies and children is being recalled after tests revealed that they may be contaminated with three different types of disease-causing fungi and bacteria, according to USA Today.
Roughly 30,000 tubes of sunscreen are being voluntarily recalled by the New Hampshire based W.S. Badger Co. Inc. The company said that the products had passed testing when they were put on sale but have since tested positive for three different contaminants. The three microbes present were: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida parapsilosis, and Acremonium fungi, according to NBC News.
The FDA reports that the following 4 oz. bottles of sunscreen are subject to the recall:
SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen Lotion (UPC: 634084490091 and 634084490114) Lot #'s 3024A, 3057B, 3063A, 3063B, 3132A, and 3133A
SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen Lotion (UPC: 634084490145 and 634084490169) Lot # 3164A
The products were shipped out to stores in February and company spokeswoman Deirdre Fitzgerald said that some believe that "preservative instability" may be the reason for the contamination, a problem that they are looking into, according to USA Today.
"We are already reformulating all products in question for improved shelf-life stability for next year's sunscreen season," Fitzgerald said.
The company says that there have been no adverse effects reported due to the contamination. CEO Bill Whyte said in a statement that the company recalled all of the lots of sunscreen despite only finding the contamination in a few just to be safe.
"I wanted to personally apologize for this recall," Whyte said in a statement. "We Badgers put great effort into making exceptional products and I'm so sorry that we feel short on this one. We will do everything in our power to see that this never happens again."
If you have purchased one of the recalled products take it back to the original point of purchase for reimbursement or contact the company directly.
