‘Update to iOS 7 Make your iPhone Waterproof’ Ad Damages iPhones of Gullible Users

A seemingly-real Apple ad urging users to update their iPhones to make it waterproof has deceived some gullible users who are now left with broken iPhones.

The ad which uses the same format of Apple’s official commercials spread like wildfire in various social media sites. The fake promotion says, “Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof. In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry.”

The idea of a waterproof iPhone is a big selling strategy as users who saw the ad started updating their iPhone software to test it out. However they found that they only destroyed their pricey gadget.

Some couldn’t help but express their anger at being fooled through social media sites like Twitter. One of the iPhone users said, "Ok whoever said IOS7 is waterproof GO F*** YOURSELF"

While some were very disappointed about what happened to their iPhones, some couldn’t help but comment about those who fell for it. A comment from one of the readers in the Independent said, “If anyone is stupid enough to fall for this they deserve to have their phone's destroyed.”

The software update, iOS7 was launched on Friday introducing fresh and numerous features including a revamped visual however emergency waterproof functions is not one of them.

According to Apple, there are more than 200 million users that had updated their devices to iOS7. The latest iPhone 5C and 5S on the other hand already broke sales record with 9 million units sold during its weekend launch.

The bogus marketing ad was reported to have started off from the infamous on-line forum 4chan, known for its habit to initiate false ad campaigns on social media sites. One of it was the 2012 Twitter hack of Entertainment Tonight tweeting that Justin Bieber had cancer. The result was overwhelming as fans started shaving their heads to express support to the popstar. The hashtag #BaldforBieber went trending.
