The final season of “How I Met Your Mother” aired its first two episodes Monday night, and we finally get to see Ted Mosby interact with THE Mother.
Warning: this article will contain LOTS of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the episode and don’t want the surprises ruined, do not continue reading.
In the first episode of the two-part premiere, Barney and Robin are discussing how every wedding has a “wildcard” who will somehow ruin the wedding. They begin listing potential “wildcards” only to find out they share a Canadian cousin and could possibly be related!
Don’t worry; Robin and Barney share no blood.
Lily begins her segment in the show as the first one who meets The Girl With The Yellow Umbrella, as referred to in episodes past. The Mother notices Lily is upset on the train and offers her some homemade cookies she’s named “Sum-B****hes.”
The girls talk about what’s effecting Lily; Ted has done everything he can in the previous scene to annoy Lily on the way to Barney and Robin’s wedding. Lily believes it’s because Ted is plotting something to ruin the wedding with gift.
Lily suspects Ted has gone to Los Angeles to see Stella about a misplaced locket Robin wanted to wear for her wedding as her “something old.” The necklace is important to Robin because it was meant to be her sign from the “Universe” telling her she is ready to marry Barney.
Marshall is stuck in Minnesota with the couple’s son Marvin, but ends up carpooling with Sherri Shepard’s guest role as Daphne. I’ll admit this story line was not my favorite; I found Daphne annoying, which is what I suspect the writers wanted you to feel.
Back at the hotel once Ted arrives, Lily tackles him trying to prevent him from presenting Robin with the gift. He ends up giving Robin a photograph of their group of five friends from the first season to remind her they will always be there, no matter what changes.
Lily apologizes to Ted about assuming he would ruin the wedding, a flashback ensues showing him at an airport heading to Los Angles, ending the episode.
Major SPOILER: if you check out the flash-forward at the first episode of season 8 where Ted meets Robin before her wedding, she’s seen wearing a necklace that could possibly be the locket.
The second part begins with Ted and Lily check into the hotel. Lily finds out Marshall missed his flight to New York and needs a little liquid courage to get her through the wedding weekend. While Ted is dealing with the front desk attendant who pities him for being alone in a romantic hotel, Lily makes her way to the bar.
Lily bribes the bartender Linus with $100 to keep a drink in her hand at all times. Linus calls it the “Kennedy” package.
Robin, Ted, Lily, Barney and his brother James (Wayne Brady) meet up for drinks in the hotel. Barney leaves the table for a moment and James drops a major bomb: he’s divorcing his husband, Tom, whom he cheated on multiple times.
Robin begs James to not tell Barney, as James and Tom were the couple that made him believe in marriage. However, in her drunkenness Lily blurts out the news in front of Barney.
Barney abruptly leaves the table, but Robin decides to follow him. She panics, believing Barney was going to call off the wedding and head to the raunchiest strip club he could find.
However, Barney proves Robin wrong and shows her what he actually went to do, which was to remove the surprise he set up for James and Tom’s anniversary that was also the same weekend as their wedding.
Barney decked out the room with roses and a giant erotic cake of the gay couple. He tells Robin he doesn’t need them anymore because he’s proven to her true love exists.
The show ends with Ted siting at a table at the bar alone, a flash-forward then begins showing him reminiscing with The Mother one year later, where he revealed he’d made a promise he would come back to the romantic hotel with her.
