Serena Williams' chase for a calendar-year Grand Slam ended on Friday, as she lost to unseeded Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.

Williams could have tied Steffi Graf for the second-most Grand Slam singles titles with 22, but she still only has 21 and will have to wait until next year's Australian Open. Williams is only three Grand Slams away from the most all time held by Margaret Court at 24.

The U.S. Open final is Vinci against fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta, who beat the second-seeded Simona Halep. Someone will win their first title, as both Halep and Pennetta have yet to win a singles title.
