Caitlyn Jenner will admit that she has had a much easier transition than many in the transgender community, but she could face that harsh reality soon if sent to prison for a car accident earlier this year that left one woman dead.

In February, Jenner's car collided with the vehicle in front of her on the Pacific Coast Highway, forcing it to careen into the path of an oncoming Hummer. The driver, 69-year-old Kim Howe, was killed on impact.

"A tragedy like this you'll never get over it, you just learn to live with it the best you possibly can," the 65-year-old reality star told "Today" co-anchor Matt Lauer in an interview that aired on Wednesday.

Jenner now faces the scary possibility that she could face as much as a year of prison time in a men's jail rather than a women's facility because of her transgender status. The case is in litigation so she could only tell Lauer a little about the circumstances.

"[Going to jail] is the worst-case scenario... the men's county jail," she said. "It is an enormous problem that they would put trans women in the men's county jail, but those are things we are looking into."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office completed its investigation of the four-car accident last month, and it may recommend to the court that Jenner be charged with "a misdemeanor violation for involuntary manslaughter," Det. Richard Curry told CNN on Aug. 20.

The investigators concluded that the "I Am Cait" star had no drugs or alcohol in her system, but she was traveling at an unsafe speed under the conditions despite going under the posted speed limit.

"I was under the speed limit - I was doing 46 in a 50," Jenner told Lauer. "My airbag didn't even go off. All I needed was probably a half a second of time [to stop]... I couldn't quite get [the car] stopped."

"Today" will air the second part of Lauer's interview with Jenner on Thursday morning on "Today."
