The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of over 2 million dehumidifiers after dozens of fires have been reportedly caused by the devices manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances, reports the Christian Science Monitor.
The CPSC says that the dehumidifiers that were sold at major retailers including Home Depot, AAFES, HH Gregg, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam's Club, Sears, Kmart and Lowe's since 2005 may overheat and catch fire. The devices were also available online through Amazon.com and Ebay.com, according to the CPSC.
The devices have been linked to 46 fires that have caused over $2 million in property damages. Luckily, no injuries have been reported from the fires, according to USA Today.
The dehumidifiers were sold under multiple different brand names including: Danby, De'Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima. The recall covers dehumidifiers of the following capacities: 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 50, 65 and 70-pint, according to the CPSC.
If you own one of the devices the CPSC recommends that you turn it off an unplug it immediately to avoid incident. By contacting the manufacturer, Gree, consumers can receive a full refund on the dehumidifiers that sold for $110 to $400 nationwide and in Canada, according to the CPSC.
Gree can be called toll-free at (866) 853-2802 in between the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. You can find out more about the recall on their website www.greeusa.com, according to the CPSC.
