The disastrous mayoral campaign of Anthony Weiner will be remembered for many things; the Sydney Leathers debacle, the fight at the bakery, his wife standing by his side until she didn't and flipping off reporters on election night all come to mind. The one thing that may get lost in the shuffle is the resounding political defeat Weiner was dealt by New York voters; Weiner only received five percent of the vote, according to CNN.
Weiner, a former congressman, had been attempting to make a political comeback after he had resigned from office for sending lewd photos of himself over the Internet. Almost from the onset his campaign was troubled when it became clear that his online activities had not all been made public.
Sydney Leathers, a young woman from rural Indiana, told gossip website The Dirty that she had engaged in an online relationship with Weiner after he had resigned from office. From that point on Weiner's campaign seemed doomed while Leathers went on to get plastic surgery and appear in a pornographic film for Vivid.
When the scandal first broke Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, supported her husband. On Tuesday morning Abedin was noticeably absent when Weiner voted; normally there is a photo op with the wife of the candidate at the polls. The Weiner campaign said that Abedin was busy working but she was also absent later in the evening at Weiner's concession speech, according to the New York Daily News.
"Now, sadly, we did not win this time," Weiner said at Connolly's Pub in Midtown. "But I could not be more proud of the campaign we ran. We have the best ideas. Sadly, I was an imperfect messenger."
Leathers decided to crash the party and was seen wandering around the pub trying to locate Weiner and talking to reporters. Despite all of her efforts Leathers was never able to confront the mayoral candidate, according to CNN.
"We went to his campaign headquarters today first, and he decided to rearrange his schedule because apparently he doesn't think he can handle confronting me or being in my presences so I felt like it was only appropriate to make one last stop," Leathers said.
After the concession speech Weiner jumped into a car and slammed the book on his mayoral campaign with one last message for reporters; he flipped them the bird.
