Weeks after the city of Detroit became the largest city in the United States to have to file for bankruptcy the Motor City could use some good news. Friday that good news came in the form of the city's fictional savior from the 1980's, RoboCop.
A trailer for the much talked about remake of Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece action flick about a post-apocalyptic Detroit was released on Friday and it looks to be promising.
Judging from the trailer it looks like director Jose Padilha has figured out how to update the series for the 2010's without losing any of the elements that made the original so beloved. Most notably RoboCop has turned in his silver look for a sleek black body. Of course the effects look a heck of a lot cooler than they did in the 1988 original, the ED 209 looks amazing, and thankfully the 1985 Ford Taurus with a black matte paint job is no longer the vehicle of choice for the police.
Samuel L. Jackson appears to be playing the equivalent of the Dick Jones character from the first film which very well may be a perfect casting choice. It'll be interesting to see what Michael Keaton's role in the film ends up being.
From the trailer it seems as if they are going to change the backstory of Murphy (played by Joel Kinnaman). It looks as if they are going to do almost the exact opposite of what the original film did; in the original Murphy started off believing he was a robot and discovering his humanity, it looks like the reboot is going to make him aware of being in a robot and possibly having that part take over.
After watching the trailer many sci-fi fans who were probably a bit on the fence when they heard about the remake will be converted and channeling their inner Bixby Snyder and exclaiming "I'd buy that for a dollar!"
