A Louisiana police officer was shot and killed late Wednesday evening in Shreveport while answering an emergency call, Reuters reported.

Shreveport police officers, who were assisted by state police, called in 70 units to the scene and were backed by helicopters and drones in search of the shooter, who ran off after he fatally shot the officer several times.

The officer, whose name has yet to be released to the public, was brought to University Health, where he succumbed to his injuries and died, according to The Shreveport Times.

A manhunt for the shooter is currently underway. Investigators believe they have knowledge on who the shooter might be and are trying to get a warrant for his arrest, Shreveport Police spokesperson Bill Goodin said, the Associated Press reported.

The officer was on duty late Wednesday night, when he was investigating a home believed to have been infiltrated by a suspicious person, according to the Atlantic Journal Constitution. Cpl. Marcus Hines said the person was armed and threatened to hurt a family member.
