Baby Stolen from Hospital in Uganda: Authorities Say Mother-In-Law Worked with Kidnappers to Abduct Newborn

A 58-year-old Ugandan woman has been arrested in the Eastern town of Tororo for reportedly stealing a newborn baby from the hospital.

Rita Oyine has been accused of working with accomplices to snatch a child that was just delivered by Jemina Alima, according to AllAfrica.

Both Oyine and Alima are residents of the same village named Kisole A, located in Buteba sub-county.

Oyine is also Alima's mother-in-law, adding further mystery to the already perplexing kidnapping case.

Alima gave birth Wednesday morning at the town's hospital, accompanied by Oyine.

The strange event has got medical officials scratching their heads-they've spent the last two days searching for the baby, to no avail.

Oyine reportedly told police officers that a few women dressed up in medical garb-white dresses and gloves-came into the delivery room and stole the baby. She also mentioned that one of the women even gave them tea after Alima gave birth, which brought forth the impression that these imposters were actual midwives.

Alima allowed Oyine to take care of the child while she went outside to look for a taxi to take her mother-in-law and new baby home. But when she got back to the delivery room, she discovered that Oyine and the baby were gone.

Malaba region police spokesperson Michael Odongo said that Oyine had been arrested by police and taken to jail for further questioning.

Odongo also stated that a full investigation has begun to find both the child and the kidnappers.
