After some parents erupted in anger at a Five Pillars of Islam display, school administrators at a Kansas elementary school temporarily removed it from the bulletin according to The Huffington Post.
The bulletin display at Minneha Core Knowledge Magnet School had only been up for a few days before a photo of it was released on the Internet, causing parents, blogs, and even a politician to demand it be taken down.
State Rep. Dennis Hedke said that he was "appalled" at the bulletin.
"If you're going to talk about Islam and make it sound like it's another one of those religions that needs to be understood and contemplated by mankind, there's a serious misunderstanding," Hedke said.
A blog called Conservative Firing Line shared the same point of view as Hedke.
"So, it's okay for this religious poster to be prominently placed in a school, but not the Ten Commandments? Really?"
The blog also includes an excerpt from Patrick Richardson of PJ Media, pondering the inclusion of such a display in Kansas.
"The questions presents themselves: First, why would a school in the middle of the Bible Belt present something like this? Second, will they give the same pride of place to Christianity? Judaism? Mormonism? Zoroastrianism?"
According to the school administrators, the answer to Richardson's question is yes. Linda Hope, principal of the school, sent a letter to parents on Monday explaining that Islam, in addition to the rest of the world's major religions, are a part of the curriculum at the school.
"There are some who took offense to the bulletin board without understanding Core Knowledge curriculum, and this offense resulted in numerous phone calls, e-mails and media inquiries," Hope wrote. "In order to alleviate the distraction to our students and teachers, the display was taken down last week until this particular unit for 4th graders is taught in early October."
