CVS Pharmacy Cancels ID Requirements on Buying Nail Polish Removers

Buyers of nail polish removers and other acetone products at CVS pharmacies will no longer be required to present their IDs. A spokesman announced on Thursday clarifying that this not applicable for all states though.

The largest pharmacy in the U.S released a provision last month that consumers intending to buy products containing acetone will be required to present their ID. The order was released to 7,400 stores through email by the director of public relations Mike DeAngelis.

The pharmacy chain decided to regulate acetone as it is one of the ingredient used to illegally manufacture methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system of a person once exposed. Short-term health effects include loss of appetite, convulsions, and hyperactivity. Long-term exposure, on the other hand, may result to changes in brain, heart complications, and violent behaviors.

The CVS administration revisited their new provision after receiving consumer complaints that the decision was unnecessary. They finally ruled out to cancel it in most states excluding California, Hawaii and West Virginia.

“After thoroughly reviewing our policies for the sale of products that contain acetone, in most states we will no longer require customers to present an ID to purchase these products, including nail polish remover,” DeAngelis said in a statement in the Kansas City Star.

“To comply with certain regulations requiring retailers to record sales of products containing ingredients used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, we will continue to require ID for the purchase of acetone products in Hawaii and the purchase of iodine products in California, Hawaii and West Virginia.”

CVS is planning to put an age limit for buyers in the future but they haven't discussed anything yet.

The cancellation announcement was cascaded through the company's social networking accounts Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday.
