Musician John Mellencamp's youngest son Speck has turned himself into police at the Monroe County jail in Indiana, as he faces felony battery charges.
According to a police official at Monroe County who spoke with USA Today, 18-year-old Speck Mellencamp showed up at the jailhouse at 11 a.m. on Friday. He was allowed to leave after someone paid a $5,000 bond for his release at around 12:30 p.m.
19-year-old Hud Mellencamp, Speck's older brother, also faces battery charges in connection with a fight that occurred in late July, but he has yet to turn himself in.
A third young man has also been pinned as being involved in the fight, but he, too, has not been brought in. Ty Smith, son of Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith, was charged with felony battery as well, according to Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters.
The fight, which occurred in the very early morning of July 29, happened when the two Mellencamps and Ty Smith went to the home of a 19-year-old following a party he had thrown.
According to court documents, a fight broke out-but the details over who hit who are still murky. Speck said he was under the impression that the 19-year-old hit him with a closed fist at the party. But the 19-year-old, who has not been named, maintains that Speck socked him in the face so hard that he crumpled to the ground.
The physical argument escalated, until the Mellencamps and Ty Smith broke out of the home. The 19-year-old then called the police and filed a report.
Speck Mellencamp and his father John played music together often-the younger Mellencamp even played guitar with his dad when he was put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
Older son Hud won Indiana Golden Gloves titles as a boxing champ in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
John Mellencamp is best known for his song "Jack and Diane."
