The United States Capital was placed on lockdown on Thursday after gunshots were reported on Capitol Hill; female suspect's condition is unconfirmed.

NBC News reports a female suspect attempted to ram her car into the White House gate. The Secret Service pursued the woman and shots were reportedly exchanged. Reports have not confirmed if the alleged suspect was armed.

In incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., and the woman may have had a child in the car, according to NBC. The child is reportedly safe.

"This appears to be an isolated incident," said Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine. "Both scenes are under control."

President Obama is safe and was briefed about the situation. Authorities do not believe it was an act of terrorism.

Capitol Police released the following notice to Capitol Hill employees:

"SHELTER IN PLACE. Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring all occupants in all House Office Buildings to shelter in place. Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. Take annunciators, Go Kits and escape hoods; and move to the innermost part of the office away from external doors or windows. If you are not in your office, take shelter in the nearest office, check in with your OEC and wait for USCP to clear the incident. No one will be permitted to enter or exit the building until directed by USCP. All staff should monitor the situation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

Capitol Police confirmed an officer was injure during the crash, CNN reports. Congress is in its third day of a Government Shutdown.

"The timing on this was really kind of scary," Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold of Texas told CNN. "Capitol Hill police are at a lower personnel level because of the shutdown."

Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the female suspect. The story is currently developing.
