The Philippine National Police have confirmed the death Abdul Basit Usman, a suspected terrorist and bomb-maker, citing the results of DNA tests.
Usman was killed in an encounter with Moro Islamic Liberation Front forces last May 3 in Maguindanao.
According to the PNP, its Crime Laboratory confirmed the maternal relationship between the DNA profile of skin tissue specimens from Usman's body with the DNA profile of his mother. Another DNA match was also confirmed between Usman and his nephew.
Saliva samples from Usman's mother Singkorya Dagkog Usman, and his nephew Hairudin Balt Usman were also collected by the PNP Crime Laboratory, according to GMA Network.
The remains of Usman were also identified in sworn statements by two barangay officials in Guindulungan, Maguindanao who were able to take snapshot photos of Usman's body.
Meanwhile, Inquirer reported the MILF member also submitted a sheet of plain bond paper with Usman's alleged fingerprints and bloodstains.
CNN Philippines had earlier reported that the Armed Forces of the Philippines had claimed the death of said terrorist but was further proved through a more in-depth investigation by the PNP.
To recall, a reward of P6.3-million was offered by the defense and interior departments while the US Justice Department's Rewards for Justice Program also offered up to $1 million for information leading to the arrest of Usman.
Usman is a Filipino bomb-making expert linked to Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf Group and Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist groups and was considered a threat to U.S. and Filipino citizens and interests.
