The communications director of Anthony Weiner's campaign for mayor has publicly apologized to Olivia Nuzzi, a former intern, who shared her internship experience with the New York Daily News that didn't go over so well with the campaign.
In an interview with Talking Points Memo, communications director Barbara Morgan referred to Nuzzi as a "fame hungry bitch" who "sucked" at her job and threatened to sue the "slutbag."
Morgan did not take well to Nuzzi's now infamous piece where she revealed that many staffers were only there to get close to Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, and Abedin's boss, Hillary Clinton, with the hopes of a better job one day. Nuzzi also claimed that the staff was underpaid and counted more staff departures post-scandal than the public knew about.
She also mentioned that Weiner called her and another female intern "Monica" by accident, twice.
In response to her scandalous rant, Morgan told the Wall Street Journal she thought her conversation with the Talking Points Memo reporter was off-the-record:
"In a moment of frustration, I used inappropriate language in what I thought was an off-the-record conversation," Morgan said. "It was wrong and I am very sorry, which is what I said tonight when I called and emailed Olivia to apologize."
However, John Marshall, editor of Talking Points Memo, told the Wall Street Journal their conversation was on-the-record.
The incident just adds to the list of setbacks for Weiner, whose popularity has declined since revelations of his second sexting scandal surfaced this month. A poll released on Monday found Weiner's popularity down 10 percent in the last week.
Despite the recent events, Weiner released a campaign video Tuesday evening on his website vowing to stay in the race for mayor. In the video, Weiner insists those who suggest he quit the race that "quit isn't the way we roll in New York City" and that as a New Yorker, he "fights through tough things."
