Facebook news feeds could no longer be that friendly for businesses, big and small. Owning a Facebook page to get more referrals for a product or service may not be enough these days. This is due to Facebook's news feed alterations that would undermine content pages of businesses, Smartcompany reported.

According to the publication, a blog post written by Max Eulenstein, Facebook product manager, and Lauren Scissors, who is in charge of user experience, explained that Facebook posts from friends such as status updates, links, videos and photos would be elevated in the news feed rather than posts from from content pages.

Eulenstein and Scissors said Facebook wanted to reduce the promotional content on news feeds and would rather increase the exposure of a post made by a user's friend.

Social media expert Dionne Lew told the publication that this is another challenge for publishers and content providers using Facebook to reach their targeted markets. Lew noted that social media is evolving and so must the work of content publishers and managers.

Another major change on Facebook is the multi-functionality of the Messenger app, which now allows money transfers. It can also be used for customer service and third parties can make plug-in apps to further enhance its capabilities.
