Dallas (40-22) sixth in the Western Conference and only 8 1/2 games out from the top seed after ending their two-game losing streak on Monday with a 102-93 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Much has been made about Rondo's lack of production since getting traded to Dallas, but on Monday he showed life with 19 points.
One of the biggest questions for Dallas, though, is whether Rondo returns after the season. He's had a seemingly tempestuous with coach Rick Carlisle and may look for greener pastures in July as a free agent. On the other hand, Rondo has yet to fit into the Mavericks' offense and has underperformed since the trade - Dallas may not be inclined in the offseason to offer him a big contract.
Still, Carlisle has insisted Rondo is a part of the team's plans.
"He's done a great job," said Carlisle, via ESPN. "Again, he's learning what it takes to play with our players and vice versa. We're on a path where we're going to figure it out.
"He's looking to be aggressive. He's looking to make aggressive paint and rim attacks, and when he can finish it's great and when he draws one or two guys, he can find the right guy. That's where his special ability is."
Portland, meanwhile, has a 1 1/2-game lead over Dallas and sits third in the West. They head into Thursday's contest looking for their fifth straight win after handing the Los Angeles Clippers a 98-93 loss on Wednesday.
