A NATO supply compound located in Kabul was attacked by armed rebels early Tuesday morning, leaving more than seven people dead.
At around 4:30 a.m. a compound run by international logistics firm C3PO that supplies transportation and materials to NATO in Afghanistan was hit by a group of insurgents who have upped their assaults in the capital, according to the Los Angeles Times.
In addition to offering construction services, the compound is also home to a hotel for international firms and government bodies staying in Afghanistan.
A C3PO official who spoke on conditions of anonymity said that the attack started when a suicide bomber set off an explosive-packed truck at the entrance of the compound.
Deputy Kabul police chief Mohammad Daud Amin told the Los Angeles Times that two Afghan drivers stopped at the front of the gate died instantly from the blast.
Four additional insurgents stormed the compound, as they opened fire on security guards who responded with sets of rounds. Four guards of Nepalese descent, along with an Afghan guard who was stationed at the compound, were killed in the bombardment.
Once Afghan police officials arrived on the scene, they shot four attackers dead, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry, who released a statement after the attacks.
Upwards of five Afghan civilians got hurt from the blast, which also decimated a few buildings and houses in the vicinity.
The Afghan Taliban has said they were responsible for the attack.
In the recent past, armed rebel attacks have become more violent and frequent, after a series of assaults during the past month left around 30 people dead.
A group of insurgents managed to pervade a gate at the presidential palace compound in the capital city last week, but were quickly shot down by security officials. Three guards died during that assault.
Last month, a suicide bomber parked a car stuffed with explosives at the front of the Afghan Supreme Court in Kabul. 17 people were killed, and 38 more were injured. This attack came just one day after seven militants died during an attempted blitzkrieg at the Kabul International Airport.
