Google is working on a new maps app that will soon be available on Apple's iTunes store, reveals a Wall Street Journal report.
Quoting an unnamed person with direct knowledge of the matter, the report said the Internet giant has been putting the final touches to the app before submitting it for approval to the Apple iTunes store.
Although the future of the app is quite unclear now, once accepted into the iTunes store, the app will directly compete against Apple's own mapping software that comes inbuilt in its mobile devices.
However, Apple said it would not comment on apps that haven't been submitted for approval, the report said. It should be noted that the Cupertino-based technology titan approved some of the Google apps lately.
"We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world," a Google spokesperson was quoted in the report. "Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system,"
Apple's attempt to topple the Google maps with their own maps software backfired. The errors in the program forced CEO Tim Cook to publicly apologize to customers and may have prompted the ouster of iOS chief Scott Forstall.
