The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics are in talks for a blockbuster deal according to ESPN.com citing “sources familiar” with the negations. The two sides want to get a verbal agreement done by Thursday night.
Sources say the trade would put both power forward Kevin Garnett and small forward Paul Pierce in Brooklyn. However, Kevin Garnett has yet to waive his no-trade clause—which is reportedly the only thing holding up the deal.
"It's in the hands of KG and Boston management now," said a source.
Technically, if the trade were to reach a verbal agreement, the teams would not be able to officially carry out the deal until July 10. On July 10 a moratorium on signings and trades will be lifted for NBA teams.
"It's very serious and can happen very soon," a source familiar with the talks said.
According to Yahoo Sports, here is what the two sides are offering:
The Brooklyn Nets—power forward Kris Humphries, small forward Gerald Wallace, small forward, Tornike Shengelia, power forward Reggie Evans, a sign and trade with Keith Bogans,
The Boston Celtics—Garnett, Pierce, shooting guard Jason Terry
Since Pierce is bringing in $17 million this season the Nets want to wait until the moratorium is gone since the small forward’s $15.3 million team option is used within the deal.
The addition of the Jason Terry to the trade allowed Boston to ease its worries with taking on the $30 million contract that comes with Wallace.
According to The New York Daily News, the Nets were making moves to go after Garnett earlier in the week.
ESPN reported, citing sources, part of the reason the Nets added Pierce was to give Garnett more of an incentive to come to Brooklyn.
