Building Collapse In Mumbai Kills Five, Injures Six

At least five people were killed and six injured Monday in a five-story building collapse in the Indian film city of Mumbai, officials said.

Another five persons are feared trapped in the debris of the building in Sion area of the city, said Vijayendra Dahiya, an official with the National Disaster Management Authority.

"Locals say seven to eight people, mostly children and senior citizens, are feared trapped in the debris," Vijayendra Dahiya told Associated Press confirming the death toll.

What caused the collapse is not clear as of now. The disaster management official said that rescue operations will continue throughout Tuesday.

"Rescue operations went on overnight and will continue all of Tuesday. It is not clear what caused the collapse," said Dahiya.

Sreya Suresh Kumar, a resident in Mumbai, said to Head Lines and Global News that the rescue operations were hampered by the heavy rain fall last night.

In another building collapse incident in the same city last April, 74 people were killed. The building was an illegal construction, built without approval from concerned authorities.

Nine people were arrested in connection with the building collapse including builders as well as police officers and municipality officials.

In a similar building collapse case in 2010, sixty nine people were killed in the Indian capital city New Delhi.
