Starbucks announced Thursday that its mobile app will get a delivery option in select areas next year.

Howard Schultz, CEO of the American coffee chain, said the new service will launch in the second half of 2015, according to CNBC. The delivery option will be available to Starbucks loyalty program members for the new mobile order and pay app, which is scheduled to debut in Portland in November and across the country next year.

"Imagine the ability to create a standing order of Starbucks delivered hot to your desk daily," Schultz said during a conference call. "That's our version of e-commerce on steroids."

The announcement follows Starbucks' recently reported low quarterly sales, The Associated Press reported. The Seattle-based company earned $587.9 million (77 cents per share) in the quarter, and revenue wasn't able to meet analysts' expectations, coming in at $4.18 billion instead of the expected $4.24 billion.

Starbucks has been trying to increase customer loyalty by getting more people to use its app. The order option for the app is aimed at getting customers in and out of stores quicker.

Schultz also said Starbucks is working on different ways to change customer behavior, such as pushing for more online shopping and less shopping at physical stores.

"We are playing offense," he said.

Schultz didn't provide any more details about the new delivery service.
