Today is a special day in the hearts—and stomachs—of many. June 7 marks National Doughnut Day.
This holiday was created in 1938 to fundraise by the Salvation Army in the midst of the Great Depression. It was also a holiday to commemorate the “lassies”—female volunteers—who were of aid to those on the battle field in World War I. They fed the soldiers with a variety of food, including doughnuts, according to ABC News.
Here are some of the major chains also paying homage to the holiday, according to ABCNews.com.
· Krispy Kreme will be giving out any doughnut of any kind “at participating locations, while supplies last.”
· Dunkin’ Donuts will be giving away a doughnut when you buy any beverage.
· Entenmann’s does things a little differently to commemorate the holiday. They give $1 to the Salvation Army for every “Like” they get on the company’s Facebook page until June 15. Entenmann’s also offers the chance for someone to get a supply of free doughnuts for a year.
If you’re ever in the New York metropolitan area and you want a little more than just a glazed doughnut from the big name guys, there might be some places for you, according to Timeout.com.
· Orwasher’s Bakery (Between First and Second Avenue) offers a more authentic jelly-filled doughnut. The filling, which comes from a farm in the Hudson Valley, is not made from processed stuff but has bits of real fruit inside. $4.25 for one and $44 for a dozen.
· The General Bakery (199 Bowery at Spring St.) is trying to combine two breakfast favorites—doughnuts and cereal. You’ll be able to turn back the clock to enjoy doughnut covered in Cocoa Puffs or Fruity Pebbles. Get one for $3 or three for $8.
· Doughnut Plant strays away from the typical circle shape to offer its pastries to you in the form of a square. But it doesn’t stop there. Try their peanut butter & blackberry jam, chocolate chip cookie and strawberry or even their pudding-filled blackout cake. Head to 379 Grand St or 220 W 23rd St to get the delectable treats which range from $2.25 to $3.25.
