Former Major League baseball slugger Jose Canseco reportedly underwent surgery after he accidentally shot his finger off at his Las Vegas home Tuesday afternoon, his fiancée said.
According to KLAS-TV, 50-year-old Canseco was cleaning a gun when he accidentally shot his left hand, said his fiancée Leila Knight. "I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string. It will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery," the model told the Los Angeles Times.
At around 2:30 PM PDT Tuesday, officers received a call of an accidental shooting, Metro Police Lt. Mark Reddon said, USA Today reports. He was taken to Southern Nevada's University Medical Center.
The former Oakland Athletics outfielder said in his statement to the police that he was cleaning his gun at the kitchen table when it fired.
Knight told the Times that doctors said that the player will never regain full use of his left hand, the Huffington Post reports.
The New York Daily News quoted the model as saying, "At first the police asked me if we were in a fight. I said of course we weren't. We have four guns in the house. We are now going to have zero. I hate guns. She further informed that Canseco was "a little freaked out" too and was continuously saying, "Sorry, sorry."
The former baseball all-star, who won baseball's Rookie of the Year award in 1986, later admitted to using steroids. In his 17-year career, Canseco hit 462 runs and played for the Oakland A's, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays (then known as the Devil Rays), New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
