The Brunete Town Hall in Spain and 20 volunteers teamed up to mail dog feces back to dog owners who carelessly behind according to Gawker.
The town and McCann Erickson, an advertising company, "launched a campaign aimed at reducing the amount of dog poop found in the town's streets." Dog owners were sent a box marked "lost item" with a warning of a fine attached.
This is the second attempt made by the town to raise awareness and encourage dog owners to take responsibility for the feces left by their pets. It's been reported that last year the campaign included a remote control piece of poop that read "Don't Leave Me, Pick Me Up" that chased dog owners around. The response was great but was not enough to greatly minimize the "unscoped poop issue."
According to The Local, in order to accurately deliver unscooped poop to its rightful owners, volunteers patrolled the streets and spoke with the unsuspecting dog owners to get information about their dog that could lead to a positive address match.
"They'd ask them what the dog's name and pedigree was," a spokesperson for Brunete's Town Hall said. "With that information they could find out the address of the pooch's owner from a registered pet database we have.
Social media has played an active role in letting the campaign know if the bold approach is working and if it is favored. Feces found on the streets have reportedly declined 70 percent.
Other solutions are being considered to tackle the unscooped poop issue. The town is hopping to implement designated areas owners can take their dogs to use the bathroom.
McCann reportedly won the Silver Sun award at the Latin America Festival of Advertising Communication for their participation in the unscooped poop campaign.
