Kansas City earned a spot in the division series after a walk-off win in Tuesday's wild card against the Oakland Athletics. The Royals overcame a 7-3 deficit in the sixth inning, advancing with a 9-8 win on catcher Salvador Perez's 12th inning RBI.
"This team showed a lot of character tonight. We weren't going to quit," Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said, via ESPN. "... This will go down as the craziest game I've ever played. This team showed a lot of character. No one believed in us before the game. No one believed in us before the season."
Royals manager Ned Yost felt the same way.
"That's the most incredible game I've ever been a part of," Yost said. "Our guys never quit. We fell behind there in the fifth inning, sixth inning. They kept battling back. They weren't going to be denied. It was just a great game."
Kansas City will send Jason Vargas (11-10, 3.71 ERA) to the mound Thursday to open the series. Although the Angels have slugger Mike Trout, Vargas insisted he wouldn't be concerned about focusing on just one batter.
"There aren't very many players like (Trout) that come along," Vargas said. "(But) you're going to have to negotiate that whole lineup, and if you think about one hitter, your work is going to be cut out for you."
Vargas will be opposed by Jered Weaver (18-9, 3.59)
