Three U.S. Naval Academy football players are under investigation for an alleged sexual assault of a female midshipman last year, according to multiple reports
According to Military.com, who first reported the story, the Naval Academy would not disclose the names of the players under investigation. The Naval Academy officials did not confirm when the investigation of students will be completed.
"Naval Academy leadership is monitoring the progress of this investigation and evaluating the appropriate options for adjudication," told Cmdr. John Schofield, the Naval Academy spokesman, to Military.com. "It is completely inappropriate to make any other public comment on this investigation or any ongoing investigation as we risk compromising the military justice process."
According to NBC News, the alleged victim and the three students had been drinking. Reportedly, she had sex with one of them, her boyfriend, in the back seat of a car, sources told NBC News. The other two male students allegedly had sex with the woman afterwards.
One student was a senior set to graduate last week, but his graduation was put on hold pending the investigation and other two are juniors at their Annapolis, Md., school, according to NBC News.
President Barack Obama spoke to the Naval Academy's graduating class on May 24 about the growing number of reported sexual assaults in the military.
Those members of the armed forces who commit such acts of assault "threaten the trust and discipline which makes our military strong," Obama said, according to USA Today.
The victim allegedly reported the incident to officials in February 2012. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service launched an investigation. Four months after the incident was reported, the woman stopped cooperating with investigators.
The alleged victim renewed her complaint in February 2013 and the investigation was restarted, according NBC News.
No charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation.
