Sources in Taiwan are saying Apple is getting ready to unveil two new iPhones sometime in the 2013 third quarter and has requested that iPhone makers within the supply chain get ready for around 20 million units per month, according to DigiTimes.com.
According to sources, the two new iPhones will be a new type of iPhone 5 and another iPhone which will be more on the cheaper end. The cheaper iPhone will be somewhat similar to the 4S but have a lower quality display and a slower processor.
The sources also said the new iPhones will most likely begin shipping at the end of the second quarter and hit a surge in the third quarter. Shipments from July to December could hit numbers as high as 100-120 million units.
Since sources say a newer version of the iPhone 5 is Apple’s next move, iPhone fans may have to wait even longer for the iPhone 6. As for right now, they probably have to look forward to an iPhone 5S.
This news from industry sources seems to be in line with recent predictions made by Peter Misek, an analyst with Jefferies. Misek said earlier this month the supply chain was currently set for the next iPhone to be a 5S and not a 6. Misek said this translated to a June 2014 release for the iPhone 6.
So far, there are many rumors concerning the iPhone 6’s specs. The most recent rumor comes from a patent filing which indicated a new iPhone may have the ability to adjust the call volume automatically based upon the distance between the phone and user’s ear. Also indicated in the patent filing was the possible doubling of pixels for the iPhone 6 compared to the amount of pixels on the display for the iPhone 5.
According to NVO.com, Apple is expected to put a “quad-core Apple A7 ARM Cortex A15-based replacement” into the new iPhone “along with at least 2GB of RAM.”
