Rachel Canning, the teenager who received backlash for suing her parents, is now taking her boyfriend to court over a domestic violence dispute.
The Star-Ledger reports Canning, 18, received a temporary restraining order against Lucas Kitzmiller, 18, after he allegedly choked her during an argument. Canning left he parents’ home in October 2013 after they told her to stop seeing Kiztmiller.
Canning and Kitzmiller are scheduled to appear before Judge James DeMarzo in the Family Division of Superior Court in Morristown, N.J. on Aug. 6. Both parties were warned not to publicize the case on social media.
“This is a private matter,” Sean Canning, Rachel’s father, told the Star-Ledger. “We’re confident the court will handle it appropriately. We want to let everything die down and go back to our private lives.”
Kitzmiller hasn’t released a statement regarding the case. Canning originally made headlines when she sued her parents for $650 a week in child support along with $5,306 owed to her private school. Canning voluntarily left her home after disagreeing with her parents’ set rules.
"My parents have rationalized their actions by blaming me for not following the rules," Canning wrote in her initial complaint. "They stopped paying my high school tuition to punish the school and me and have redirected my college fund, indicating their refusal to afford me an education as punishment."
Canning was denied her requests for child support and private school feels. The teen eventually dropped the case in March and returned home. Canning graduated from Morris Catholic High School and is attending Western New England University in Springfield, Mass. in the fall.
