A Hawaiian man aboard a British Airways flight from London was arrested after he flew into a rage, claimed he possessed a bomb and threatened to blow up the plane, the New York Daily News reported.
Kevin Lee Mosele, of Kihei, was arrested after the plane touched down at LAX in Los Angeles on Monday. He appeared in a federal courtroom the next day where he was charged with one count of interference with a flight crew.
The British Airways plane was about an hour into the flight from Heathrow International Airport when the Mosele suddenly became hysterical.
"I am going to set off a bomb," the 20-year-old stated according to an affidavit obtained by the newspaper.
Flight attendants rushed in the direction of the shouting man, who then told one attendant "I bet I can open the door." The flight attendant did not answer and Mosele became more agitated.
"Is that a challenge? I think I'm gonna do it," Mosele said according to the affidavit.
Investigators said the flight attendants found small bottles of wine and liquor around the man's seat that were different from the brands served onboard. Unable to calm Mosele down, the captain ordered four male flight attendants to shackle him with metal handcuffs. The attendants then used "webbing" to bind him to his seat.
But Mosele's tantrum continued, despite the captain threatening to drop him off in Iceland, the affidavit reads.
"I am going to f------ kill you," Mosele reportedly said to the crew. He continued to struggle against the cuffs and spit at the flight attendants for the remainder of the flight, the Daily News reported.
Mosele, who was released on $10,000 bond, reportedly admitted to threatening to bomb the plane and then kill the flight attendants. He also admitted to drinking beer and wine during a nine-hour layover in London.
Mosele's next court appearance is scheduled for August 4. If convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison.
