Overpass Collapse Kills 2 People In World Cup Host City

At least two people were killed after an overpass collapsed Thursday in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, less than two miles from the stadium where the World Cup games are in full swing.

As Reuters reported, the front of a bus was smashed and several vehicles were crushed by the unfinished overpass that fell on the outskirts of Mineirao Stadium where five World Cup games have already taken place.

The Minas Gerais state health department said two people were killed and another 19 were wounded.

There is one confirmed cased of a person still trapped in their car but others could also be trapped, a fire department spokesman told the news agency. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

Witnesses described hearing a loud sound right before the collapse, according to Reuters.

"We were travelling normally and then there was a terrible noise," said Renata Soares, who told GloboNews TV she was on the bus at the time of the incident. "I am sure that more people in other cars were underneath the debris."

The unfinished overpass was part of a series of bus lanes that were supposed to be completed in time for the World Cup.

The deaths come less than a month after a construction worker was killed by a falling 90-ton beam at a monorail train building site in Sao Paulo, Reuters reported.

Brazil faced heavy backlash in recent months from locals who felt the government was spending too much money in preparation for the World Cup instead of paying attention to domestic projects. However the protests have occurred less since the start of the World Cup.

A World Cup match between France and Germany is set to take place Thursday.
